Ed Adobe Illustrator CC 2018 v184.108.40.206 [Snow]
Adobe Illustrator CC 2018 is a vector graphics software that allows you to create logos, icons, illustrations, and other designs with professional-level precision and time-saving features. One of the new features introduced in this version is the support for color fonts, which are fonts that contain multiple colors, gradients, and textures. In this article, we will show you how to use a color font called Trajan Color to create a winter-themed text effect with a snow-like appearance.
Step 1: Create a New Document
To start, create a new document in Illustrator by choosing File > New or pressing Control-N (Windows) or Command-N (Mac OS). Set the width and height of the document to 800 px and 600 px respectively, and the color mode to RGB. Click OK to create the document.
Step 2: Add a Background Gradient
Next, we will add a background gradient to the document. Select the Rectangle Tool (M) from the toolbar and click on the artboard to create a rectangle with the same size as the document (800 x 600 px). Fill the rectangle with a linear gradient from the Swatches panel by clicking on the Gradient icon and choosing one of the presets. We used the Blue, White gradient, but you can choose any color you like. Adjust the angle of the gradient to -90 degrees from the Gradient panel or by dragging the gradient annotator on the artboard.
Step 3: Add Text with Trajan Color Font
Now we will add some text to the document using the Trajan Color font. This font is included with Illustrator CC 2018, but you can also download it from [Adobe Fonts] if you don't have it installed. Select the Type Tool (T) from the toolbar and click on the artboard to create a point text object. Type "SNOW" in uppercase letters and set the font size to 200 pt and the alignment to center from the Character panel. You can also access this panel by choosing Window > Type > Character or pressing Control-T (Windows) or Command-T (Mac OS).
To apply the Trajan Color font to the text, click on the Font Family menu in the Character panel and choose Trajan Color from the list. You will see that the text changes to a gold color with beveled edges by default. This is because Trajan Color has multiple stylistic sets that you can choose from to change its appearance. To access these sets, open the OpenType panel by choosing Window > Type > OpenType or clicking on the OpenType icon in the Character panel. Then click on the icon in the top right corner of the OpenType panel and choose Stylistic Sets from the menu. You will see a list of different sets that you can apply to the text, such as Bevel Gold, Bevel Silver, Snowy, etc.
For this tutorial, we will use the Snowy set, which gives the text a white color with snowflakes and icicles. To apply it, select Stylistic Set 9 from the menu and you will see that the text changes accordingly.
Step 4: Adjust Text Position and Opacity
To make the text more visible and realistic, we will adjust its position and opacity. Select the Selection Tool (V) from the toolbar and move the text object slightly upwards on the artboard so that it is not touching the bottom edge of the document. Then open the Transparency panel by choosing Window > Transparency or pressing Shift-Control-F10 (Windows) or Shift-Command-F10 (Mac OS). Lower the opacity of the text object to 80% from this panel.
Step 5: Add a Drop Shadow Effect
To add some depth and contrast to the text, we will apply a drop shadow effect to it. With the text object still selected, go to Effect > Stylize > Drop Shadow or click on the fx icon at the bottom of the Appearance panel and choose Drop Shadow from there. In the Drop Shadow dialog box, enter these settings:
X Offset: 0 px
Y Offset: 5 px
Blur: 10 px
Click OK to apply the effect.
Step 6: Add a Snowflake Brush
To make the text more festive and snowy, we will add some snowflakes around it using a custom brush. First, we need to create a snowflake symbol that we will use for the brush. To do this, open the Symbols panel by choosing Window > Symbols or pressing Shift-Control-F11 (Windows) or Shift-Command-F11 (Mac OS). Click on the icon in the top right corner of the Symbols panel and choose Open Symbol Library > Nature > Snowflakes from the menu. You will see a library of different snowflake symbols that you can use. Choose one that you like and drag it to the artboard. We used the Snowflake 1 symbol for this tutorial.
Next, we need to create a brush from the snowflake symbol. To do this, open the Brushes panel by choosing Window > Brushes or pressing F5. Drag the snowflake symbol from the artboard to the Brushes panel and release it. You will see a dialog box asking you to choose a brush type. Choose Scatter Brush and click OK. You will see another dialog box where you can adjust the settings of the brush. Enter these settings:
Name: Snowflake Brush
Size: Random, between 10% and 30%
Spacing: Random, between 50% and 100%
Scatter: Random, between -100% and 100%
Rotation: Random, between -180 degrees and 180 degrees
Colorization Method: Tints
Click OK to create the brush.
Step 7: Apply the Snowflake Brush
Now we can apply the snowflake brush to create some snow around the text. Select the Paintbrush Tool (B) from the toolbar and choose the Snowflake Brush from the Brushes panel. Set the stroke color to white and the stroke weight to 1 pt from the Properties panel or by pressing Control-F3 (Windows) or Command-F3 (Mac OS). Then draw some curved lines around the text on the artboard to create a snow effect. You can also adjust the opacity of some lines from the Transparency panel to make them look more natural.
Congratulations, you have created a winter-themed text effect with a snow-like appearance using Adobe Illustrator CC 2018 and its new feature of color fonts. You can use this technique to create other festive designs with different fonts and colors. Have fun and happy holidays!
